![]() The portfolio seemed intimidating at first. It would contain every single asset to our research in an organized way. Nonetheless, I bought a three inch binder, collected a large supply of page protectors, and printed out everything that was assigned in our rubric. One thing I realized in this was the demand for ink and paper that was needed for ISM. Knowing this, I re-organized my Google Drive to include a folder. This folder would hold every single document for ISM that had a colored image in it, and those pages would be printed in our school library. This method should minimize waste since every paper in my portfolio that has a black and white image needed to be replaced. Also, doing this helped reorganized my online schoolwork. I have struggled with organization throughout my life, and it has caused me to lose track of assignments. Meanwhile, I was granted with an opportunity to help lower income families in South Dallas for the Day of Dignity event. This was held by the Islamic Relief Foundation. We provided essentials, such as clothing, food, water, and toys, to the homeless in the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. In addition, the foundation was able to give out free registrations to vote and free community health services such as blood tests. My responsibility specifically was helping disabled people get what they need. Overall. The experience was a great chance to interact with indigent families. ![]() This week, we tested our communication skills and built a foundation for our professional character. We staged mock telephone calls and a professional dress review. In our first assignment, I was paired with a partner with the task of scheduling an interview as if they were one of my contacts. It felt very awkward, and it helped me realize the importance of having the confidence to say what is needed. Also, the exercise taught me to be flexible in scheduling with the person I am interviewing. The professional dress review was an analysis on our attire, and it provided me with specific areas to improve upon. We simply had to come into class dressed as if we were in an interview. I wore gray-black slacks, black shoes, a white shirt, and black tie, and a striped gray blazer. The color scheme was sufficient enough to be approved. My cast unfortunately did interfere with the buttons, but it should not ultimately cause any trouble. Ultimately, this evaluation of my attire will help me appear presentable by our first research interview. In an attempt to further organize myself, I utilized Google Calendar to set reminders and prioritize my assignments. This allowed me to streamline all my assignments into a coherent system. With this, I should theoretically never miss any upcoming assignments. These extra precautions will help me prepare for a heavier ISM workload later in the year. Great nations need organizing principles, and 'Don't do stupid stuff' is not an organizing principle. - Hilary Clinton
![]() Our first week of ISM was an assessment of my creativity and skills in leadership. We were grouped in fours, and we were tasked with building the tallest structure possible with toothpicks, tape, and a Styrofoam cup. Our group had several ideas on how to approach the task, but we were restricted by a short time limit and a lack of supplies. As you can see in the picture, our tower was about as structurally sound as my left arm. It was not very impressive. However, the assignment helped us get a gauge of our peers, and evaluate our skills under pressure. I was absent in our second day because I had an appointment for my fractured wrist. A long arm cast was implemented which restricted my movement for the next couple of weeks. Later, we were assigned with building our professional profile. This included our resume, a LinkedIn profile, and a personal website. As we worked on this, I realized the true emphasis on the independent part on Independent Study & Mentorship. Although we were given certain guidelines, we had the freedom to choose how to present ourselves. However, my classmates were more than willing to criticize any faults they observe. I was astonished by the work I managed to complete so far. As of now, I have formulated my mission statement, chosen my quote, created the framework for this website, found a multitude of contacts for potential mentors, and researched basic information about my field of study I hope to remain this motivated for studying sports medicine throughout the year!
