Orthopaedic medicine is the specialty of medicine that is concerned with the physical deformities and conditions that result in the dysfunction of joints, muscles, and ligaments. The word is derived from the Greek prefix "Ortho" meaning upright, straight, or correct. This pertains to correcting structural impairments.
I have always had a strong interest in sports medicine and sports-related injuries. I Through my study this year, I would like to focus on surgical procedures and recovery in order to increase my knowledge in the atmosphere of being a health provider.
As a wrestler at Liberty, I suffered a wrist injury that has suspended me from competing for the year. In my time receiving treatment for my fractured scaphoid, I gained a profound appreciation of the work that orthopaedic surgeons performed. I had an opportunity to ask questions and appreciate the complexity of my procedure. I hope to learn as much as I can throughout my year in ISM.
My life is based on a certain set of values. Service for others has always been a priority. I am a firm believer of returned service in that everything I am able to accomplish should ultimately help society as a whole. Additionally, as an athlete, I am interested in the sports aspect of sports medicine. Orthopaedic medicine exists as the proper balance between these two interests. My dream of being a health care provider occurred because I wish to help people maintain a healthy and active lifestyle in whichever sport they wish to practice. Ultimately, I hope that I can use what I learn in ISM to help society down the road.
Health care providers possess characteristics that reflect their maturity and intellect. These include dedication, honesty, adaptability, and perceptiveness. I believe these are characteristics I should reflect in order to successfully pursue my topic. Although I try to meet these standards already, I feel like there is always room for improvement. Medical school is very challenging, and I feel that I work best when I am faced with a challenge. It may take an exorbitant amount of hard work and dedication, but I know the reward will be more than worth it. The opportunity to give back to my community surpasses any challenges face along the way.
